A great family game night isn’t just about competition, it’s about laughter, friendly rivalries, and unforgettable moments. Whether you love wordplay, strategy, or pure chaos, these ten board games are guaranteed to bring the whole family together for a night of fun and mischief.

1. Monopoly

  • Players: 2-8
  • Average Price: $25
  • Average Playtime: 60-180 minutes

No family game night is complete without Monopoly, the classic game of buying, trading, and crushing your opponents financially. The funny part? Watching family members go from cooperative to cutthroat as they charge outrageous rents and refuse to trade properties. And, of course, there’s always that one player who insists on hiding money under the board…

2. Risk

  • Players: 2-6
  • Average Price: $40
  • Average Playtime: 120-240 minutes

Risk is the ultimate test of diplomacy, strategy, and backstabbing. Nothing is funnier than watching alliances crumble in seconds when Dad suddenly sweeps through Asia, or little Jimmy’s single army somehow holds off an entire invasion. Plus, there’s always that one player who spends hours plotting and still loses spectacularly!

3. Trivial Pursuit

  • Players: 2-6
  • Average Price: $30
  • Average Playtime: 60-90 minutes

Nothing brings out family hilarity quite like Trivial Pursuit. Watching Grandpa confidently answer “The Beatles” for every music question or your sibling guess “Abraham Lincoln” for anything history-related never gets old. And the best moments? When someone randomly guesses correctly and acts like they knew all along!

4. Telestrations

  • Players: 4-8
  • Average Price: $30
  • Average Playtime: 30-60 minutes

Telestrations, turning simple drawings into complete nonsense. Players start with a word, draw it, and pass it along—only for their masterpiece to be completely misinterpreted. By the end, “Elephant in a bathtub” somehow turns into “Mutant dog attack,” leaving everyone in tears of laughter.

5. Clue

  • Players: 3-6
  • Average Price: $20
  • Average Playtime: 45-60 minutes

Few things are funnier than accusing your mom of murder while keeping a straight face. Clue is part detective game, part comedy, as players try to figure out who did it, where they did it, and how. The funniest part? When someone makes a wild accusation and realizes they were completely wrong!

6. The Game of Life

  • Players: 2-6
  • Average Price: $30
  • Average Playtime: 60-90 minutes

The Game of Life is hilarious because of how absurd life can be. One minute, you’re a doctor making a fortune, and the next, you’re living in a trailer with six kids. Watching someone go bankrupt because of “unexpected pet expenses” is way funnier in a board game than in real life!

7. Tjuv och Polis (Swedish board game)

  • Players: 2-6
  • Average Price: $35
  • Average Playtime: 45-90 minutes

This was my all time favorite board game growing up! In Thief and Police, one player is the police and up to five players can be thieves. The goal is to rob stores, post offices or banks to make enough money to flee the country via boat, train or flight. The winner is the one manages to escape and flee with the most money. Playing police is the most challenging, so it might be recommended for an adult if playing with younger kids. However, you can also make up your own rules to spice up the game, once we could bribe the police. I can’t seem to order it online from outside Scandinavia, but my search for this legendary board game goes on.

8. Chutes and Ladders

  • Players: 2-6
  • Average Price: $15
  • Average Playtime: 15-30 minutes

The classic, Chutes and Ladders is perfect for families because it requires no strategy, just pure, uncontrollable luck. The funniest moments come when someone climbs all the way to victory, only to land on a snake and tumble down to the bottom. Watching everyone cheer at their own good luck and groan at their bad luck makes this game a hilarious emotional rollercoaster.

9. Sorry!

  • Players: 2-4
  • Average Price: $15
  • Average Playtime: 30-45 minutes

The game Sorry! is inspired by the fake sincerity when you send someone’s game piece back to start: “Oh no, I’m so sorry!” (while secretly celebrating) is a family game night staple. This game is proof that revenge is sweet, even to the most innocent family members.

10. Twister Ultimate

  • Players: 2-6
  • Average Price: $20
  • Average Playtime: 10-30 minutes

Okay, it’s not a board game, but Twister Ultimate deserves a spot on this list for sheer hilarity. Watching Dad try to balance on one foot while reaching for a red dot, or seeing your sibling collapse into a heap, is guaranteed to bring uncontrollable laughter. Plus, it’s a great way to test your flexibility (or lack thereof)!
